The fertile Brazos Valley gave rise to an agricultural community rich in cotton and cattle. By the time railroads were established, College Station was on its way to becoming one of the fastest-growing cities in Texas.

Thanks to the efforts of the Historic Preservation Committee and of City staff, College Station's history has been well preserved and recognized multiple times by the Texas Historical Commission.

TELL YOUR STORY

We need your help in capturing the history of College Station's people and places! We want to highlight your favorite moments as we look back on the growth of our city from 1938 to today.

We need your stories from when you were growing up, playing, going to school or working in College Station, Texas. Do you have some old pictures you'd like to share? We'd love to see them!

We need volunteers to help us capture untold stories from around the community. We have a whole database of historic documents and pictures that need to be sorted, too. If you are interested in history or know someone who would like to help, please call or email us.

The City of College Station Historic Preservation Committee (HPC) was created by City Ordinance on April 9, 1986. The HPC is made up of nine citizens who are appointed by City Council for two year terms. Meetings are held on the first Monday of the month at 4 p.m. in the second floor conference room of Municipal Court at 300 Krenek Tap Road.

Project HOLD is an online library database filled with historic photos, documents and memorabilia. Volunteers scan all materials into Project HOLD for all to enjoy.

Exploring History Luncheons are brought to you by the College Station Historic Preservation Committee and the Senior Advisory Committee. Each month they invite speakers to share their knowledge of local history with you and provide a light lunch. The luncheon is $7 per person and is held the third Wednesday of each month at 11:30 a.m.

Through the City of College Station Historical Marker Program, area residents can document buildings, homes, or subjects with a commemorative plaque awarded by the Historic Preservation Committee.

Recording the voices of our heritage is a most rewarding program. Members of the Oral History Team make appointments with senior community members who, over the years, have seen our city change and grow. Team members use digital recorders to document the interviews which are then transferred to the Project HOLD website for easy listening. Play a part in preserving these rich and colorful stories and make new friends along the way.

The Memory Lane Oral History Project was conducted from 1994-1997. The oral histories are organized into the following categories: Northgate, Southside, Eastside, Early Education, Early Transportation, The Old Days, A & M Campus Kids, and Military. The Memory Lane Oral Histories are an excellent source for history, research, and writing endeavors.
